Pokémon Eternal: Warriors of the Sword and Shield (Japanese: ポケットモンスター エターナル: ソードとシールドの無双Pocket Monsters Eternal: Sword and Shield Unrivalled) is a hack-and-slash spin-off of the Pokémon series developed by Existence Software and Koei Tecmo. The game combines gameplay mechanics of Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors franchise with those of the Pokémon franchise, and setting a story in the world of the former. The game is a prequel to the 2019 titles Pokémon Sword and Shield, being set 3000 years earlier during the events of the "Darkest Day" described within that game's plot.
(insert generic bullshit Warriors gameplay write up here)
Adding onto the basic Warriors gameplay formula, Pokémon Eternal also features the Pokémon series's main gameplay mechanic: type matchups. Though the playable Pokémon characters lack traditional moves like in the Pokémon series, their typings are retained for their appearance in Pokémon Eternal. Pokémon will have a harder time dealing damage to enemies that are of types that resist those of the playable character (and vice versa), and likewise Pokémon will deal more damage to those that are weak to their types. There are a total of 18 types in the Pokémon series and Pokémon can have either one or two natural typings; some Pokémon also change their typing if they have the ability to alter their appearance and take on a different "Forme". Unlike in the main Pokémon series, no Pokémon is completely immune to any type and the type matchup chart reflects these changes.
The ways the eighteen different types affect each other are as follows:

Story[]
Long ago a meteorite crashed into the world, landing in the region that would become Galar. No humans lived on this land at the time, but the region was home to a wide variety of different Pokémon species. Unknown to them, this meteorite carried a sleeping alien beast, one that feeds on energy to survive. Though this Pokémon would lay dormant for 17,000, its peaceful slumber would not last forever. In the 17,000 years since this Pokémon arrived on the planet, some humans began to populate Galar and give the sleeping beast the name "Eternatus". But, on one faitful day, the extraterrestrial Pokémon finally awoke, and brought about an event that would become known as the Darkest Day. Standing up against the gigantic beast stand four individuals: a fairy king and his sword, and a fighting master and his shield.

Playable Pokémon[]
The following 46 Pokémon act as the playable "warriors" in the game. Of these Pokémon, there are three sets of "clone" characters that share many attacks. These Pokémon are:
Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex share the exact same moveset. However, the two Pokémon feature elemental attacks that do act differently and their secondary types are another difference between the two.
Urshifu's Single Strike and Rapid Strike Formes are both playable. These two Pokémon feature the same standard moves with different special attacks. The two Pokémon also feature different typings, allowing them to go against separate groups of Pokémon.
Zacian and Zamazenta appear in both their "Hero of Many Battles" and "Crowned Sword/Shield" Formes. The two wolves' Hero of Many Battles forms share the exact same moveset - differing only through the Pokémon's types - while their Crowned Sword/Shield Formes are wholly unique.
